Understanding Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialised field focused on diagnosing and treating conditions related to the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. “Oral” pertains to the mouth, while “maxillofacial” refers to the jaw and facial structures. This unique speciality is a vital link between dentistry and medicine, as it addresses a broad range of issues requiring knowledge and skills from both areas.

What Does It Involve?

This surgical field encompasses a wide variety of conditions—from facial trauma and jaw misalignment to head and neck cancers, salivary gland disorders, chronic facial pain, impacted teeth, and cysts or tumours in the jaw and oral cavity. Patients may seek the care of an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for procedures such as wisdom tooth extractions, removal of cysts or tumours, or reconstructive surgeries of the face and jaw.

Expert Care

With over 25 years of experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Reid has trained and worked across the UK and internationally, including Ireland, Scotland, Yorkshire, and the USA.

His NHS consultancy roles and specialist expertise in facial trauma, skin cancer, salivary gland disease, and jaw conditions reflect a deep commitment to comprehensive patient care.

His global surgical work and teaching experience further enhance the high level of care he provides, ensuring patients benefit from a broad, well-rounded clinical perspective.

Mr Johnny Reid- Maxillofacial consultant provides and accepts referrals for:

  • Wisdom tooth removal and complex extractions.
  • Investigation of skin and mouth lesions, including cysts and cancers e.g. biopsy and removal of oral and skin lesions, and pathological investigation.
  • Tongue tie release.
  • TMJ Treatment, including anti-wrinkle treatment for facial muscles.

Advanced Technology

Collingham Dental Care has advanced imaging technology, including Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), which enhances diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning. This imaging system uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam, delivering lower radiation exposure and faster scan times than conventional CT scans. It captures detailed 3d images of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures.

In addition, the practice utilises piezoelectric bone surgery, a cutting-edge technique that uses high-frequency vibrations to cut bone while precisely preserving nearby soft tissues. This ultrasound-based technology minimises bleeding, reduces post-operative pain, and supports faster healing.

Patients are welcome to access treatment through private health insurance or self-pay.
